Pastreich discusses the marriage of art and technology at the Electronics Telecommunications Research Institute

October 29, 2010 – Pastreich delivered a talk at ETRI (Electronic Telecommunications Research Institute)–one of the most famous research institutes in Korea–about the need to increase the exchange between artists and those involved in technology. Pastreich was joined by Ms. Miyoung Jeon, owner of the SSol Gallery and Mr. Hyeongweon Jeon, owner of the Igong Gallery. Ssol Gallery and Igong Gallery are two prominent galleries in Daejeon and had not previously had any interaction with ETRI. The two gallery owners from Daejeon spoke about the arts scene here and made several very concrete suggestions for possible collaboration.

Discussion on Technology Convergence at KRISS

October 25, 2010 – Pastreich visited KRISS (Korea Research Institute for Standards and Science to discuss possible cooperation concerning technology convergence. The hope is that a forum for the discussion of technology convergence can be established.

Founding of the Korea Industry Convergence Association (KINCOA)

October 10, 2010 – Pastreich was named as a founding member of the Korea Industry Convergence Association (KINCOA) and made a member of the advisory committee with responsibility for international exchanges for Korean companies, research institutes and government. It was the first time in history that an international has been appointed the founding member of a Korean industrial association.

October 10, 2010 – Pastreich visited K-Water, Korea’s water corporation, to discuss collaboration with the “Integrated Water Management Systems” Initiative of CMAS and the Asia Institute. CMAS (Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies) is part of the World Institute administrated by the Asia Pacific Rim Research Universities. Dr. Jim Falk of University of Melbourne serves as director.

Successful agreement of Asia Institute with IC2 Institute, KISTI and Daejeon Metropolitan City

July 25, 2010 – The IC² Institute of the University of Texas, Austin has joined forces with KISTI (Korea Institute for Science and Technology Information) and the City of Daejeon to launch a new program in commercialization of local technology. The program will be run together with the assistance of the Asia Institute.

Global Green Growth and the International Association of Science Parks

May 23, 2010 – The 27th World Conference of the International Association of Science Parks (IASP) will be held in the Daedeok research cluster in Daejeon, Korea—one of Asia’s leading centers for innovation. IASP will focus on the multidimensional problem of responding to climate change and reimagining the economies, the communities and the manufacturing infrastructures of the world in the face of this unprecedented challenge. Under the rubric of “Global Green Growth” IASP XXVII Daedeok will bring together the full range of IASP members, complemented by a select group of experts in green technologies conversant on climate change to engage in a broad discussion of how science parks can serve as the vanguard in proposing viable solutions to climate change. IASP 27 will take up the mandate of Copenhagen 15 (the United Nations Climate Change Conference) for a drastic reduction in emissions and the establishment of a broad range of sustainable development initiatives.

Release of Report on Nuclear Power in Southeast Asia by the Asia Institute and the Korea Nuclear Safety Institute

May 05, 2010 – The Asia Institute submitted its report “A Survey of the Nuclear Safety Infrastructure in Southeast Asia and Prospects for the Future” to the Korea Nuclear Safety Institute (KINS), the product of a six month intensive study involving SolBridge International School of Business faculty Sergey Butakov, Michel Delorme and Emanuel Pastreich, with the assistance of Matthew Calabria and SolBridge International School of Business students Hu Die, Pamarthy Likith Srinivasa, Ngoc Bui, Yanti, Margaret Lopulisa and Mook Phipatseritham.

April 23, 2010 – Director Pastreich spoke at a meeting of the Korean Association for Logistics and Distribution about the implications of the increase use of nuclear power in Southeast Asia for logistics. He stressed issues of safety and safeguards, particularly in the case of Vietnam.

April 22, 2010 – Daejeon’s Sister City Seattle sent a delegation of business representatives to Daejeon to discuss closer relations in business and research. April 15, 2010 – A high-level delegation from Battelle, a leading international technology development company, visited the Asia Institute to discuss cooperation related to the internationalization of Korea’s technology sector. Director Pastreich visits Nautilus Institute, MIT and CSIS to discuss Nuclear Power in Asia

February 16, 2010 – Discussed the present efforts of the Nautilus Institute to move forward with a program for non-proliferation in Northeast Asia and the possibility of KINS playing a role in that program. The program is not focused on nuclear power directly, but offers much opportunity for cooperation. In specific, a conference on a Korea-Japan Nuclear free zone is planned for Daedeok this year.

February 01, 2010 – Director Pastreich travelled to Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam in February, 2010. In Jakarta, he met with representatives of BATAN & BAPUTAN, the regulatory bodies for nuclear safety and nuclear energy to discuss Indonesia’s current energy policies. In Singapore, he was a guest at Nanyang Technical University, conferring with Asia Institute senior associate Professor Foo Check Teck and meeting Dr. Kim Hock KOH, Director Centre for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Science of the Ministry of the Environment. Pastreichh also met with representatives of the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety I Hanoi and spoke with Vice Minister Tien of the Ministry of Science and Technology part of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Power research project with the Korea Institute for Nuclear Safety.

Asia Institute Launches Research Project with Korea Institute for Geosciences and Materials

February 01, 2010 – The Asia Institute launched a six month project to work together with Dr. Ahn Jihwan, senior researcher at the Korea Institute for Geosciences and Materials (KIGAM) to study the potential for commercializing a new carbon capture technology.

January 25, 2010 – Director Pastreich wrote an editorial in the Maeil Gyeongjae Sinmun (MK Newspaper) advocating that Korea can play a leading role in the G 20 era and should do so by establishing a permanent headquarters for the G 20 in the new Sejong City. Pastreich argued that Sejong could serve in part the role of an international city of diplomacy similar to the role played by Geneva, but with a focus on Asia.

Asia Institute Participates in India-Korea Forum Hosted by Indian Embassy, Daedeok Innopolis and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy

January 18, 2010 – The Asia Institute helped to organize an international forum to explore the economic and technological implications of the India-Korea Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA ) between the Republic of Korea and India. Director Pastreich hosted the half-day event featuring policy makers, technical experts and businessmen and gave an address at the banquet dinner. The Forum was held just days before Korean President Lee Myung-Bak visited India as a state guest to sign a wide range of agreements for cooperation in business, research and government.

Director Pastreich Appointed as Columnist for the Maeil Business Newspaper (Maeil Gyeongjae Sinmun)

January 15, 2010 – Asia Institute’s Director Emanuel Pastreich has been appointed as a columnist for the Maeil Business Newspaper (Maeil Gyeongjae Sinmun), Korea’s leading newspaper for finance and business. He will write a monthly column on contemporary economic and political issues, especially those involving the United States and Korea.

The Asia Institute engaged to draft Daedeok Declaration for International Association of Science Parks International Convention

January 14, 2010 – Daedeok Innopolis has engaged the Asia Institute to draft the Daedeok Declaration, a far-ranging proposal for cooperation between science and technology parks (STP) around the world for cooperation in environmental policy and the commercialization of environmental technologies. The Daedeok Declaration will be the centerpiece of the International Association of Science Parks Annual Convention to be held in Daedeok Innopolis in May, 2010. The declaration will call for a new level of international collaboration in the commercialization of environmental technologies as part of the “Global Green Growth,” or G³, movement advocated by Daedeok Innopolis.

Second Biotechnology Report Submitted to KRIBB

January 10, 2010 – Director Pastreich, Dr. Ian Simon, the Director of the Biotechnology Initiative, and Dr. Alp Malazgirt of SolBridge International School of Business submitted the second report to the Korea Research Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB). This report focuses on successful international efforts in biotechnology involving Korea and makes concrete suggestions for future efforts.
