Professor Michael Puett of Harvard University visits Korea under auspices of the Asia Institute and Kyung Hee Cyber University

The Asia Institute, in cooperation with our partner Kyung Hee Cyber University, hosted Professor Michael Puett of Harvard University for a one week stay in Seoul (July 16-22, 2013).

Professor Puett is an expert widely recognized for his work on the political thought of ancient China who has begun writing widely about the potentiality for the future of China to be found in its own varied and complex cultural past.

Kyung Hee Cyber University and the Asia Institute hosted three talks with Professor Puett in which he spoke to an audience of students (middle school, high school and college—as well as some adults) about critical issues for youth. The first lecture concerned the meaning of education and study with a focus on what Harvard University education offers as a model.

The second lecture concerned the larger cultural and geopolitical significance of the rise of China for Korea and the world with an emphasis on a long-term, balanced perspective.

The third lecture, which also featured Professor John Treat of Yale University and Director Emanuel Pastreich of the Asia Institute, concerned a broad consideration of strategies and approaches to study aimed at today’s youth. Continue Reading

The Asia Institute and Kyung Hee Cyber University held the first of a series of lectures by outstanding scholars from around the world.

Professor John Treat spoke on July 10 about the undergraduate education at Yale University (with comments by Emanuel Pastreich). He discussed the unique aspects of the Yale undergraduate education and offered a historical context. Professor Treat spoke on July 11 about the Japanese author Murakami Haruki (with remarks by Professor Park Sang-Hyun, Dean of Kyung Hee Cyber University & Emanuel Pastreich) and his literary works making suggestions as to how the nature of literature itself has shifted in the last few decades.

Emanuel Pastreich, director of the Asia Institute, will deliver a talk entitled Universal Norms as the Basis for Historical Reconciliation and Cooperation in East Asia: Suggestions for moving forward to an age of Peace” at the  5th International NGO Conference on History and Peace on the topic of Universal Norms for Historical Reconciliation and Cooperation in East Asia: Suggestions for How we can move forward to an age of Peace” This talk will be delivered at 9:30 AM on Wednesday, July 24 at Kyung Hee University. The 5th International NGO Conference on History and Peace this year is dedicated to the theme “Civil Society’s Contribution to Promoting a Peaceful Community and the Evolution of Civilization” and Pastreich’s talk will focus on strategies for building a new culture of commonalities in Northeast Asia in the face of the challenges of the future.
