December 07, 2007 – Dan Malone, Director of Global Automotive at Betzel Long, visited SolBridge International School of Business on December 7 to meet with faculty and students and discuss future cooperation. He also delivered a talk on automotive safety and innovation in the parts sector at the Chungnam Techno Park in Cheonan.
Pioneering alternatives to Corporations and Government Employment
December 03, 2007 – Dr. David Stevens and Dr. Stephen Treloar of Cumberland Industries, a major consulting and education firm that has pioneered alternatives to corporations and government for employing individuals with disabilities in Australia, visited SolBridge International School of Business to discuss their ideas for cooperation in the social services and exchange ideas on expanding SolBridge’s overseas exchanges. The team also met with officials in local government and professors at KAIST as part of the visit hosted by SolBridge.
Visit to Oil Spill Site on Taean Peninsula
December 01, 2007 – Director Pastreich visited the Taean Peninsula in his capacity as adviser to the governor, meeting with citizens and inspecting the cleanup efforts following the December oil spill. Director Pastreich also spoke at length with government officials at the command center and volunteers about his plans to establish a park for children as a memorial to the spill. He also visited a local elementary school in Taean to speak with the children about their experiences.
Pastreich talks about Free Economic Zone on KBS
November 29, 2007 – On November 29th, Associate Professor at SolBridge Emanuel Pastreich appeared on the policy discussion program of KBS (Korean Broadcasting Service) “The Issues and the Situation on the Ground
” to discuss the proposed “West Sea Free Economic Zone” for Chungnam and Gyeonggi Provinces. Pastreich has worked closely on this project and others concerning the economic and technological growth of Chungnam province in his position as special advisor for international relations to Chungnam Governor Wan-Goo Lee. Pastreich stressed the importance of establishing a livable environment for foreigners in the West Sea area so that the full economic and technological potential of this region can be realized. In particular, he spoke of the need for English language schools, signage and printed materials in English and other languages, and greater accessibility to foreign investors. He described the possible economic benefits for Korea and for East Asia as a whole, of making this unique cluster into a culturally sophisticated center for the region. The “West Sea Free Economic Zone ” was approved by the central government in December of 2007 and efforts are underway to undertake major construction efforts from this year.
Dr. Wang Chang of China University of Political Science and Law
November 17, 2007 – Professor Chang Wang delivered a talk entitled “Strategies for Building Long-term Relationships with Chinese Government Institutions, Universities and Businesses” at the Asia Institute. In addition, Dr. Wang spoke with faculty about his work building workable exchanges between businesses and educational institutions in the United States and China, and his views on the future of education in a globalized world. Dr. Wang also took time to deliver a lecture for SolBridge students on campus. Dr. Wang has a Ph.D. from University of Illinois and a J.D. law degree from the University of Minnesota. He works as a consultant for several American companies at present.
Author, Journalist & Editor of Foreign Policy in Focus
November 15, 2007 – John Feffer, one of the most respected writers on international relations and current editor of Foreign Policy in Focus, visited SolBridge International School of Business to deliver a lecture on the “The New Geopolitics of Engaging North Korea.” Mr. Feffer outlined the political paradoxes confronting each of the major countries engaged in the Six Party Talks and offered his insights as to possible future outcomes in Northeast Asia. Mr. Feffer also met with faculty and students to discuss his work and toured the SolBridge campus. Foreign Policy in Focus is administered by the the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC. Among Mr. Feffers numerous books are North Korea/South Korea: U.S. Policy and the Korean Peninsula and The Future of Korea-US Relations. Mr. Feffer was a writing fellow at Provisions Library in Washington, DC and a PanTech fellow in Korean Studies at Stanford University. He is a former associate editor of World Policy Journal and has worked as an international affairs representative in Eastern Europe and East Asia for the American Friends Service Committee. He has studied in England and Russia, lived in Poland and Japan, and traveled widely throughout Europe and Asia.
Who’s Afraid of Globalization? Visit of Nayan Chanda to Asia Institute
October 26, 2007 – Nayan Chanda, distinguished journalist, author and scholar, winner of the 2005 Shorenstein Award for Journalism, will deliver the inaugural lecture of the SolBridge Distinguished Speaker Series. The topic of the lecture is “Who is Afraid of Globalization?” Nayan Chanda is the Director of Publications and the Editor of YaleGlobal Online Magazine at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. For nearly thirty years before he joined Yale University Chanda was with the Hong Kong-based magazine the Far Eastern Economic Review as its editor, editor-at-large and correspondent. In 1989-90, Chanda was a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC. From 1990-1992 Chanda was editor of the Asian Wall Street Journal Weekly, published from New York.
Mario Cardullo Managing Director, Belfield Group
October 09, 2007 – Mr. Cardullo delivered lectures for students and faculty at SolBridge International School of Business and hosted several round-table discussions with members of the Daejeon business and research communities. He met with the governor of Chungnam Province, Wan-Ku Lee, and delivered a talk at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) on the commercialization of satellite technology. Although Mr. Cardullo serves today as the managing director for the Belfield Group in Washington, D.C., a consulting firm for technology transfer, corporate strategy and private equity concerns.
David Straub, Visiting Scholar Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center Stanford University
June 07, 2007 – One of the earliest visitors to SolBridge International School of Business before our official opening, was Mr. David Straub, visiting scholar at Stanford University, author of numerous papers and articles, and former US diplomat. Mr. Straub consulted with the SolBridge team concerning our plans for an international program and was the guest of honor at a dinner for leading figures in Daejeon held at the Asia Museum. David Straub retired from the U.S. Department of State in 2006 as a Senior Foreign Service Officer after a 30-year career focused on Northeast Asian affairs. He worked over 12 years on Korean affairs, first arriving in Seoul in 1979, just months before the assassination of President Park Chung Hee. He served as head of the political section at the U.S. embassy in Seoul from 1999 to 2002 during popular protests against the U.S., and played a key working-level role in the SixParty Talks on North Korea’s nuclear program as the State Department’s Korea country desk director from 2002 to 2004. Straub’s final assignment was as the State Department’s Japan country desk director in 2004, when he was co-leader of the US delegation to talks with Japan on the realignment of the U.S.-Japan alliance and of U.S. military bases in Japan. He currently works as a consultant with Northeast Asia Associates, and lectures on U.S.-Korean relations at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. He is fluent in Korean, Japanese, and German.
Emanuel Pastreich delivers talk at Stanford University Stanford, California
April 19, 2007 – Emanuel Pastreich, associate professor at SolBridge International School of Business, delivered a paper entitled “Korea’s Public Diplomacy: From Hermit Kingdom to Global Hub” at the international conference “Counterpublics and the Asia Pacific” held at Stanford University. Pastreich drew attention to the new role Korea is playing in East Asia and throughout the world and noted the remarkable innovations that Korea’s diplomacy has undertaken in the period culminating in the election of Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon as Secretary General of the United Nations.
