December 26, 2008 – Director Pastreich will serve from 2009 as a member of the International Relations Committee for the province of Chungnam in Korea. Pastreich served previously as advisor to the governor of Chungnam. In this role, Pastreich will help direct Chungnam’s international engagement and efforts to draw foreign investment and establish international alliances throughout the world for further economic development. Chungnam is one of Korea’s most advanced industrial cluster and the home to the Yellow Sea Free Economic Zone.
Pastreich visits Chengdu to Discuss Environmental Policy in China
December 18, 2008 – Director Pastreich visited Chengdu China to give a talk on China’s role in the emerging environmental economy and meet with professors from the department of economics and the Environmental Studies School. Pastreich spoke concerning the proposal he wrote with John Feffer to rebuild Sichuan’s Wenchuan as an ecocity after the earthquake. Professor Liu Ming of the department of economics arranged Pastreich’s visit to the resort Dujiangyan, a city hard hit by the May earthquake, to observe reconstruction efforts.
Visit to the Sejong Institute and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology
December 15, 2008 – Director Pastreich visited the Sejong Institute in Seoul to discuss with Dr. Sun-Hak Baik the Asia Institute’s Post-2008 Asian Finance Project. He also visited the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) with Dr. Ian Simon of the Science and Technology Policy Institute to meet with KIST’s President Dr. Dong-Hwa Kum and discuss recent developments in biotechnology. Pastreich and Simon toured KIST laboratories and met with Dr. Chang-Won Kim of the Institute of Pasteur Korea.
New Efforts to Establish Korea-India Exchanges in Business and Technology
December 11, 2008 – Director Pastreich and Project Director Neeru Biswas visited the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the Federation of Korean Industries to discuss the role of the Asia Institute’s Korea-India Business and Technology Initiative and exchange opinions on the proposed Korea-India Chamber of Commerce and the implications of the India-Korea Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) which is set for ratification next year. Neil Routman (speechwriter for the minister) and Jin-Suk Kim of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy pledged to include the Asia Institute in their upcoming efforts to promote Korea-India ties. Pastreich and Biswas met with Chul-Han Park, head of the America and Europe Department at the Federation of Korean Industries, to discuss a possible seminar on Korea-India relations. Pastreich and Biswas met the same day with Vice President Peter Lymm of Samsung SDS and Dr. Lakhvinder Singh, president of the Indo-Korea Policy Forum.

Launch of “Daejeon Green Growth Forum”
November 27, 2008 – The Daejeon Environmental Forum was officially recognized by the Metropolitan City of Daejeon and the Ministry of the Environment as the “Daejeon Green Growth Forum.” The forum is the first of its kind to take on an official role as a bridge between central and local government, research institutes and industry on environmental policy. Vice President Ji-Won Yang of KAIST will remain chairman and Director Pastreich will join the working group on a “green society.”

November 21, 2008 – Director Pastreich gave the opening speech at the sixth annual Korea-Japan International Symposium on Resource Recyling and Material Sciences held at the Research Institute of International Science and Technology, Pohang, Korea. October 30, 2008 – Director Pastreich delivered a paper on the political aspects of scientific policy at the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) on November 30, 2008 in Bundang, Kyonggi Province. With its membership limited to the most distinguished Korean scholars, KAST is the highest forum for discussions on science policy in the nation. In his paper, Pastreich drew attention to the decline in the stature of science within Korean society and make suggestions as to how the close relationship of basic scientific research to daily life could be made more visible.

Central Figure in the Biosciences Visits Asia Institute
October 20, 2008 – Dr. Zach W. Hall, Asia Institute Senior Associate, visited the SolBridge International School of Business for a series of lectures for our students during their immersion week focused on biotechnology. He opened up the discussion on the importance of this field with an address on Monday, October 20, stressing the opportunities in the field, followed by a lecture on stem cell research and another on running a biotech venture company based on his own experience as CEO of EnVivo Pharmaceuticals. In addition, Dr. Hall gave formal lectures at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, the Science and Technology Research Institute of the Korean government & Seoul National University. Dr. Hall also addressed the Daedeok Club, Daejeon’s foremost forum on business and technology in a special session held at the SolBridge International School of Business.

Limited Nuclear Weapons-free Zone for Northeast Asia
October 04, 2008 – The Daejeon meeting (12th plenary) of the LIMITED NUCLEAR WEAPONS FREE ZONE FOR NORTHEAST ASIA (LNWFZ-NEA) hosted by the Asia Institute was hgh gold the culmination of a comprehensive effort to create a secure and prosperous East Asia in the 21st Century through frank discussions between credentialed specialists and government officials. LNWFZ-NEA has held regular meetings since 1991 in an effort to establish a regional security community involving all the nations of Northeast Asia and reduce the danger of nuclear conflict in Asia. This session included representatives from the Republic of Korea, the United States, China, Japan, Russia, Mongolia and North Korea. Observers from Argentina, Finland, France, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Pakistan, India, the Central Asian Nuclear Free Zone and the Southeast Asia Nuclear Free Zone will also attend. The Dean of the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, Dr. Robert Gallucci served as keynote speaker. Representatives and observers engaged in a serious debate on systems to reduce the threat of nuclear conflict, regional confidence building measures, and economic incentives for bringing the DPRK (North Korea) into the international community. Under the leadership of Dr. John Endicott, the Vice Chancellor of the SolBridge International School of Business, the Asia Institute committed itself to organizing the plenary session of the Limited Nuclear Weapons Free Zone for Northeast Asia. .

August 21, 2008 – Dr. Antonio Tata, science and technology attaché at Italian Embassy in Korea, & Dr. S. Ciaravella, professor at Scuola Sant’Anna (SSSA) of Pisa, visited the Asia Institute to discuss President Myong-Bak Lee’s recent embrace of an environment-based economy and its implications for Asia. Marriage of Science and Culture Symposium
August 14, 2008 – Director Pastreich sat on panel of the “Marriage of Science and Culture” symposium sponsored by the City of Daejeon that was held at the Press Center in Seoul to discuss the future relationship of science and culture with four leading Korean experts. Pastreich spoke about the challenges of fully realizing the potential of technology because of cultural and conceptual limitations. Other presenters included Dr. Kwang-Yun Wohn of KAIST, Dr. Jae-Chun Choe, professor of ecoscience at Ewha Woman’s University and Dr. Jon H. Wi of Chungnam University, the president of the Game-Contents Research Institute.
