Visiting speakers:
Benjamin J. Butler is an English Futurist, dividing his time between Asia and the West. He attended King’s College, London’s School of Law, and graduated in Economics and Japanese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London in the 1990s. He is known for his ability to forecast cycles or paradigm shifts in financial markets, society, technology and geo-politics. He is a trusted sounding board for many investors, companies and financial institutions. Benjamin is Founder of the Emerging Future Institute, writes the International Column for Dow Theory Letters, and is CEO of Creativity Consultancy Apotheosis Consulting. He leverages off a unique array of experiences and roles including fund manager, stockbroker, venture capitalist, and innovation consultant, seeing himself as an observer of human behavior and decision-making. He spent a number of years travelling around the world meeting leading visionaries, with the goal of discerning states of mind that lead to insight. He believes that the harnessing of collective intelligence will result in a new form of Enlightenment.
Philip Franses is a Senior Lecturer in Holistic the Science Faculty of Schumacher College (Devon, UK) as a “teacher of complexity.” Philip studied mathematics at New College Oxford from 1976 to 1980. Academia’s dull explanation of the world inspired Philip on a counter-journey into the depths of experience, travelling and a re-sensitisation to quality. In 2005, after a fifteen-year career designing intelligent software, culminating in a program now used in The Netherlands by all Dutch courts, Philip had a chance encounter with Satish Kumar and was moved to come to Schumacher as an MSc student. Philip began and edits the Holistic Science Journal. He is also the convener of a successful inquiry forum called Process and Pilgrimage.
